Recipe
Today’s recipe is a hoppy American pale ale that pairs two classic, flavorful American hops. Don't worry if you don't like hoppy beer: The techniques we'll demonstrate are general and will work for most ale recipes (lagers require some advanced techniques and equipment). You can follow along in our lessons with any recipe you like. The details will be slightly different, but the process is exactly the same.
Extract
- 7.5 pounds (3.6 kilograms) pale liquid malt extract
Specialty grains
- 12 ounces (340 grams) crystal 60 malt
Hop schedule
- 1 ounce (28 grams) Columbus (60 minutes)
- 1 ounce (28 grams) Columbus (10 minutes)
- 2 ounces (56 grams) Cascade (dry hop)
Yeast
- Dry option: 1 sachet Safale S-05
- Liquid option 1: 1 Activator packet of Wyeast 1056 American Ale
- Liquid option 2: 1 Vial of White Labs WLP001 California Ale
