Add malt extract
After your wort has reached a boil, turn off the heat, and add your malt extract. Our CB&B Pale Ale recipe includes the following malt extract
- 7.5 pounds (3.5 kilogram) pale liquid malt extract
It's important to add liquid extract syrup off the heat because it's thick and tends to sink to the bottom of the kettle. Killing the heat keeps this undissolved extract from scorching.
Gently stir your wort as you add the extract. Stirring encourages it to fully dissolve in the hot wort. Liquid extract can be temperamental and slow to dissolve, so just be patient. You may want to ladle some of the hot wort into your extract container to get out the last stuck-on bits of syrup.
When the extract is fully dissolved, our pre-boil preparations are over. Now it's time to get brewing. Turn on the heat and wait for the wort to boil.
Steve will demonstrate adding malt extract on the following page.
