What it is: You can find most everything you’d need—from draft beer to bottles of wine plus salty snacks and wifi—at this combination beer bar and packaged goods store in downtown Flagstaff. Eighteen well-selected taps offer variety and quality from breweries across the country, with a focus on the western states. On the opposite wall, 10 coolers are full of packaged beer, wine, cider, seltzer, and more, for on-site consumption or to-go. During the daily happy hour—$1 off drafts from 2 to 6 p.m.—the front patio just across from the historic Orpheum Theater is the place to be.
Why it’s great: Since 1997, Pay ’N Take has served the many tourists passing through this mountain town without losing its local soul. Friendly bartenders offer pro tips to travelers grabbing a pint before heading off on adventures down Route 66, into the Grand Canyon, or up to Arizona Snowbowl. Dogs often join their owners on the patio, and regulars feel at home enough to help water the patio’s flower boxes. The draft lineup goes beyond craft to include hard kombucha, cider, and even a couple of macro beers. Food is minimalist, but if the bar’s $10 glizzy-and-a-pint deal doesn’t suit you, excellent wood-fired pizza delivery is available from Pizzicletta.
