What it is: A staple tucked away for decades in Hawaii’s largest tourist area, hiding in plain sight among the picturesque beaches, bars, restaurants, and shops that cater to every visitor’s needs, Suzie Wong’s got new owners a few years ago. They kept the old vibes but refreshed them—dart boards, hula-dancer lamps, colorful lights, and kitsch dominate the decor. The classic beers on tap or in cans and bottles are reasonably priced. The food truck out front, Ty’s BBQ and Grill, is the kitchen for Taco Tuesday specials, pu pu platters of fried food, and more.
Why it’s great: While not a craft specialist, this beloved local dive serves several Hawaiian-brewed ales and lagers, marking them as such on the menu. The special drink here is a giant, chilled goblet of PBR—but you can also substitute your favorite draft, including rotating selections from Honolulu Beerworks, Hana Koa, Maui, Waikiki, and more. The bartenders are fixtures and know all the regulars by name and order—it’s like Cheers, but warm and sunny and people are wearing fewer clothes. Rounding out the menu are all the hard drinks you could want. As the owners say: “no frills, just great drinks and a gritty vibe.”
