Recipe: Craft Coast XPA

This extra pale ale is a crowd favorite at Craft Coast Beer & Tacos in San Diego’s North County. It’s also found success at the highest levels of competition, winning two straight World Beer Cup medals—bronze in 2024, then silver in 2025.

In developing this recipe, Craft Coast cofounder and head brewer Blake Masoner took inspiration from one of Australia’s most popular craft styles—especially the XPA from Balter in Gold Coast, Queensland. Partly because Australian tax laws incentivize lower-ABV beers, the idea behind the style is to pack bold hop character into a lighter-strength frame; it should also be brilliantly clear.

“If the trifecta is completed,” Masoner says, “several pints will be consumed in one sitting.”
