What it is: Saccharomyces Beer Cafe and its attached Saccharomyces Bottle Shop are in the heart of Brisbane, a short walk from the Queensland Museum and the winding Brisbane River. The cafe’s 17 rotating taps offer a balance of styles for every palate, while the shop adds its curated selection of beer, wine, and spirits with a focus on local makers. The full menu of hearty food weaves from Belgian-style boulettes (meatballs) on baguette—also with a vegan version—to steak frites and smoked pork belly, with more sandwiches, casseroles, schnitzels, and snack platters to share.

Why it’s great: On Fish Lane in South Brisbane, its neighborhood is the Arts Precinct and includes galleries, museums, restaurants, and more bars. The unpretentious space offers tables of all sizes, perfect for groups small or large, plus views of the walking street and murals outside. Board games and retro pinball machines offer further diversions. Their two house beers from nearby Archer Brewing—a pale ale and rice lager—contain 100 percent Australian ingredients and are always available on draft. The bar and shop also support independent wineries and distilleries from the region, with the shop hosting free weekly tastings that showcase a wide array of potent potables.
