Substantial cultivation there began only in the early in the 20th century, with cultivars brought in from Europe and North America. Today, the American types seem to predominate. Chinese hop production in recent years has been roughly 15% of the world total. Breweries in China consume the entire domestic hop production and then some. Essentially no Chinese hops are exported. Most Chinese hop production takes place in the isolated northwestern part of the country.
