was founded by Léon Huyghe in 1906 in Melle, Belgium. It remains the oldest active brewery near the city of Ghent. During World War I, occupying forces seeking local sources for munitions melted down Huyghe’s copper brew kettles. Consequently, these large and expensive vessels had to be replaced after the war. In 1938, Brouwerij-Mouterij den Appel became SPRL Brasserie Léon Huyghe and a year later, the company expanded into a larger brewery hall, where it remains to this day. For decades, the brewery’s flagship brew was a pilsner, but the brewery eventually phased this beer out, replacing it with a range of beers that might be considered more typically Belgian. Today, Huyghe is best known for its line of strong, bottle-conditioned beers under the Delirium brand with the distinctive pink elephant logo. In addition, Huyghe has acquired and revived other brands. The malty Artevelde Grand Cru was introduced in 1987, with Delirium Tremens following in 1989. A variety of robust, if sweet, fruit beers under the Floris label joined the portfolio in 1993. The success of Delirium Tremens led to the release of its darker cousin, Delirium Nocturnum. Other Huyghe brands include Kira, as well as the interesting Mogonzo, which features five exotic beers inspired by a palm wine made by the Chokwe people of Africa. Mogonzo is made only of fair-trade ingredients, including banana, coconut, quinoa, mango, and palm nut. Huyghe beers are exported to some 45 countries.
