cultivation in Silesia, in the western part of present-day Poland, an area that has been Austrian and German at times, goes back to the 9th century. Today, Silesia is only a minor hop-growing area; most of the Polish production has moved to the southeastern part of Poland, near the city of Lublin. There are other small pockets of hop cultivation in western Poland as well, some of which have been growing hops since before the 15th century. Poland grows several hop cultivars, but the variety Lublin is the most traditional. See lublin (hop). Poland grows about 3% of the world’s hops.
