was selected at Washington State University from a cross between an open-pollinated Hallertauer Mittelfrueh female seedling and a male seedling with generic European ancestry. See hallertauer mittelfrueh (hop). It was first planted in commercial trials in 1989. Vanguard is an early-maturing hop and produces about 1,400 kg/ha (1,250 lb/acre) in the Yakima Valley. See yakima valley hop region. Vanguard contains roughly 5.8% alpha acids, with 18% of the alpha acid as cohumulone. The hop has a very mild bitterness. The essential oils are made up of less than 25% myrcene and more than 40% humulene. Its aroma is one of subtle spiciness with herbal and citrus notes. Its main use in the brewery is as a substitute for Hallertauer hop varieties. Vanguard is well suited to German beer styles, including kölsch, hefeweizen, and lagers.See also helles, kölsch, and pilsner.
