accounted for most of the hop production in the former Soviet Union, in the region of Ukraine, now an independent country. The traditional hop there is stern-sounding Clone-18, believed to originate in central Europe. It appears similar to Saaz and Lublin. See lublin (hop) and saaz (hop). Much of the current Ukrainian hop acreage is in an area that was part of Poland before World War II, which partly explains the similarity between Clone-18 and Lublin. About 75% of Ukrainian hop production is of aroma varieties; the rest is in bittering varieties. Zagrava is a recently developed Ukrainian aroma hop, whereas Promin and Magnat are new bittering varieties. Ukrainian hop production comprises just a bit over 1% of the world total.
