To mark its 13th anniversary in 2024, Beachwood Brewing in Long Beach, California, released a beer called Hyperspeed IPA—what brewmaster Julian Shrago calls the world’s first “hyper IPA,” a substyle that falls between brut and West Coast while using modern, expressive hops. A hyper IPA should be very pale and dry, he says, taking advantage of dextrose, enzymes, and low mash temperature to drive a high level of attenuation.

Based on an outline from Shrago, this recipe isn’t meant to reproduce Lightspeed—but it does provide the contours for a great hyper IPA.
