What Our Panel Thought

Aroma: “Definite sweet-barrel qualities with the funky sweetness and the dark caramelization. Slight smoke and tobacco. Base beer is pretty much lost under the barrel character.”

Flavor: “Barrel character comes through on the palate with the beer playing second fiddle. Rich and complex with some dark chocolate, cherry, and caramel, and with enough sweetness to offset the significant tannin contribution from the barrels. Finish is sweet, tannic, and slightly hot.”

Overall: “The barrel aging is the predominant character. Strong and complex. There’s great underlying malt fruitiness that is accentuated by the whiskey-like finish.”

What the Brewers Say

“This batch was aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels for six months, then transferred to super-fresh Buffalo Trace barrels for another six months.”
